A product from the insect Apis Mellifica. The virgin wax (that is
unprocessed) varies in colour from golden to light yellow.
It may be made colourless by exposing it to the sun and to the air or chemically
(bleached beeswax): in the latter case, it looses some of its characteristics
that rendered the wax more useful in the artistic field in all of the historical
periods, and that make it equally useful for restoration. As a binder
(see encaustic), it finds use in the compositions of adhesives and consolidants
and , thanks to its strong water repellent properties (common of all waxes),
that protective of both works in stone and metal. |

Sostanza elaborata dall'insetto Apis Mellifica. La cera vergine (ossia
grezza) ha un colore variabile dal giallo dorato al giallo chiaro. Può
essere decolorata con l'esposizione al sole e all'aria o chimicamente (cera
di api sbiancata): in quest'ultimo caso si perdono tuttavia alcune di quelle
caratteristiche che l'hanno resa la cera più usata nel campo artistico
in tutti i periodi storici, e che la rendono ugualmente utile per il restauro.
Utilizzata come legante (vedi encausto), trova impiego in composizioni
di adesivi e consolidanti e, grazie alle spiccate proprietà idrorepellenti
comuni a tutte le cere, quale protettivo di manufatti in pietra e in metallo.
Nella fabbricazione delle malte è stata utilizzata, in emulsione
con oli minerali, come additivo con funzione antiritiro e impermeabilizzante. |
