Lemma
oleograph
Reproduction of a painting obtained with a particular chromolithograph process put into practice around the middle of the 19th Century. It consisted of printing an image on canvas or paper, which was previously impressed on the back, that creates the impression of the weave of the canvas and of the relief of the brushwork. Nonetheless, this is done without a precise reference to the real undertaking of the work in relation to the composition. Abandoning the process after a brief period of success, the term assumed a derogatory significance, indicating a type of out-dated and banal painting, with characteristics of bad taste, the absence of creativity and of mechanical like objects.
