Small instrument, generally metal, used by both the painter and the restorer to scrape, to smooth and to clean a surface of crusts, protrusions and roughness. In painting, in particular, it is used to smooth the surfaces of the abbozzo executed in oil paint when the layers of colour appear too thick, or for canceling small portions of a painting.
