Lemma
floating coat
or arricciato, fresco walldressing. In the execution phases of a mural painting, it is the second layer that is applied to a wall after the roughcast. It is composed of sifted limestone and sand with a larger grain than that used for the intonaco of the surface. This allows for a good take of the intonaco to the arricciato. Traditional recipes for a good execution of the arricciato are furnished by Leon Battista Alberti, Giorgio Vasari (1568) and Filippo Baldinucci (1681), and generally advise the use of sand from a river mixed with gesso and ground brick. Traditionally on the arricciato, a preparatory drawing was created, today commonly known as the sinopia.
