Italian term meaning canvas of the Emperor. Expression to indicate a canvas (and the relative stretcher) of a standard format, probably on the basis of a prototype that today is no longer traceable. The term appears in various sources and Italian catalogues from the 17th and 18th Centuries: by various contemporaries, among them is Filippo Baldinucci (1681) - it is identifiable by its dimensions, about 135 x 25 cm. For a similar format see Toile De Prix. |
