Compared to the form of stretcher used for textiles, this indicates the wood frame onto which the canvas support is secured and fastened (see canvas). The framework is made up of four strips of wood with beveled inside edges, which are joined at grooves and fortified with wedges for expansion. The stretcher may or may not contain crossbars, according to the dimensions of the painting that must be sustained. Oval or round stretchers are created with different elements and with an internal cross. |
