French expression to indicate one of the first canvases (and the relative stretcher) of a standard format, similar to those indicated in Italy as the tela imperatore. The roots of the format (and the term)seems to be related to the regulations of the competition sponsored by the French Academy for the promotion of students, that foresaw the presentation of a painting in a format established beforehand by the examining commission.
