Italian term literally meaning hatching or sketching. However, in this case, it indicates a technique utilized for the pictorial retouching of lacunae, adopted by the Istituto Centrale del Restauro (Italy) and followed by a good part of Italian restorers. It consists of the application of watercolours in hatches placed closely together, with pure colours for retouching with chromatic selection, or starting from a three-colour base for retouching using chromatic abstraction. The technique allows the restorer to reach a close approximation to the original, however remaining distinguishable under close observation. Due to the nature of watercolours, one should remember that, they may be used only on the white field of the intonaco or gesso, and thus, the retouching can not, in any case, extend past the margins of the lacuna.
