Layer of diluted colour that allows one to catch a glimpse of the underlying elements. The pictorial technique of painting glazes is a method for creating a transparent colouring that is placed on an underlying drawing which is strongly delineated. The use of the glaze reached its maximum peak between the 15th and the 16th Century: glazes were often rendered utilizing oleo-resinous colours, contributing to the development of a strong interest in oil painting in comparison to mixed techniques that, in the end, lead to the decline of tempera. The technique of glazing is equally employed in restoration for in-painting. |
