Aromatic hydrocarbon, present in the tar of fossil coal. It is utilized as a solvent of fat substances and, in particular, of many resins both natural and artificial. Even if the toxicity is inferior to that of benzene, it irritates the nose, the eyes and presents a type of narcotic effect. Thus, its use in restoration is limited as much as possible.
