Plant of the Cannabinaceae family, from which a fibre is obtained for the fabrication of a canvas, among the most common for a support for painting, above all for those of grand dimensions. The fibre is, in fact, particularly robust and presents a minor hygroscopicity compared to linen canvases: among the natural fibres, it is the most resistant to agents of decay, weather and humidity. As other cellulose fibres, it is sensitive to acids, but resists well to the alkali. The colour is brilliant and varies from yellow to grayish-silver. Given its strength, it is particularly appreciated for operations of lining in restoration. |
