Chemical reaction in which a water solution of calcium hydrate in the presence of carbon dioxide in the air transforms into calcium carbonate. In particular, a lime plaster is said to have carbonated when the binder has reacted with carbon dioxide from the air and developed strength beyond that which is achived simply by drying out. (J. F.
