Natural resin that is obtained from trees (Pistacia Lentiscus). It is found in both drops and little pieces: dissolved cold or hot in oil of turpentine, it furnishes an optimum finishing varnish for tempera and oil paintings. It is also used in addition to other substances as a medium for glazing and retouching. In general, mastic has characteristics similar to the resin, dammar. |
