Wax extracted from the fruit of the Rhus vernicifera that spontaneously grows in China and Japan. It is fragile and soluble in warm alcohol and petroleum ethers. It tends to yellow in the oxidation of air. It is used in pictorial techniques mixed with beeswax in the encaustic technique. It is also used as a binder for pastels and, generally, as an additive to other waxes to increase adhesive properties. |
