It is a compass constructed for measuring distances characterized by the presence of two points (in triangular or circular form) mounted onto the extremities of the legs or obtained by the appropriate workmanship of the legs themselves. It is a fundamental instrument for architects and topographers. It also finds wide use in technical and artistic design, allowing to copy distances taken from real life or from other designs and flat figurations.
