Operation aimed to re-establish a sufficient cohesion between materials that have undergone a compromise within the microstructure. Generally, one speaks of the consolidation of a painting on canvas with reference to an intervention of lining, that reinforces both the adhesion of the colours to the support and the support itself. In panel paintings, the consolidation may tend to both the pictorial surface and the support, with interventions of wedges, battens or impregnation of the structure itself. See Consolidant.
