Lemma
alligator cracks
or crazing or crocodiling. Expression to indicate the extensive cracking (craquelure) of the pictorial film, that expanding, forms spots of colours and clotted paint. The phenomenon is due to a movement of the surface layer of colour on the deeper layer, caused by a slow drying of the inferior layer to the point in which the already hardened superior layer is provoked, a characteristic cracking.
