It is an oleo-resin (see resin) obtained from some tropical plants of the Burseraceae Family. The most noted quality of elemi is Manilla, that is found in masses varying from a yellowish to gray colour, soluble in turpentine and alcohol. It is principally used as an ingredient for alcohol varnishes and, in restoration, to increase the viscosity and the adhesive capacity of the mixture utilized in the process of lining a "wax-resin." |
