or butanol. It is an alcohol derived from the fermentation of grain alcohol. It is utilized in restoration as a solvent for varnishes, hard resins (copal), shellacs and old repainting. Even though its optimum properties find limited use, as it tends to soften the pictorial layers in oil, it is thus used in mixtures. It irritates the eyes and is toxic after prolonged inhalation.
