Format of a painting on canvas of about 36 by 28 inches (circa 91 X 71 cm.), representing a figure, less than half of the height, but more than a bust portrait so as to include the hands. The term derives from the portraits of the members of the Kit-Cat Club of London, painted in this manner by Godfrey Kneller between 1705 and 1717 in order to adapt the paintings to the low walls in the room of the Club. |
