Volatile alkali with a pungent and irritating odor. The molecule is composed of one atom of nitrogen and three of hydrogen, and it is easily soluble in water and alcohol. In pictorial techniques, it is utilized to render wax soluble in water for painting with wax. In restoration, it finds use as a solvent for fat and oily materials. It is extremely irritating to the eyes, the respiratory system and the skin.
