Insect of the Coleopteran family of small dimension and with antennas of various forms, commonly known as wood-worms, and of which the largest representation is the Anobium Punctatum. Already in their larva state, they feed on substances containing wood: the tunnels dug by these insects to reach this alimentation are approximately 1mm in diameter and provoke terrible damage both to the structure and aesthetically. Regarding wood panels used as painting supports, one should point out that wood-worms act both on coniferous wood as well as hardwood: thus all of the wooden supports used in painting may be subject to their presence. The attacks seem to be localized around the external part of the panels (that corresponds with the outermost part of the trunk where the wood is more tender) and in zones characterized by the presence of glues (the joints and the imprimatura) on which they also feed. |
