Volatile substance with a strong aromatic odor, soluble in alcohol and in ethers of natural origin (from the distillation and the extraction of diverse conifers) or mineral origin (deriving from petroleum). In painting, essential oils are largely used as dilutents, and commonly they include oil of turpentine, paraffin oil and oil of lavender.
