pine |
Tree of the pine family (Pinaceae) from which one obtains a wood, which is resinous, compact, and resistant and has an aromatic smell. It is often used as a support for paintings, particularly in Central Europe: in Spain and Germany, the Scotch Pine (Pinus Silvestris) is particularly appreciated. By the exudation of diverse species, resins and essences are obtained and used in painting. See colophony and turpentine. |
