A small stick or blade of flexible metal without a cutting edge. It is found in diverse forms and dimensions and generally has a handle. It is used by painters to mix colours. It may also be used to apply large coats of paint in the execution of a painting and, in this sense, appears widely in paintings of the second half of the 19th Century. See Palette Knife.
