General term used by restorers to draw up a compound based on a mixture of waxes, oils and resins, utilized since the second half of the 18th century to saturate paintings from the darkened or ill-adhered surface with the intent to consolidate it or render it more legible. Considering the damage provoked by this practice, the term has acquired a decisively derogatory significance over time.
