or predella. Term in use since the 16th Century. Indicates a longitudinal panel or base, generally divided into more than one panel, positioned at the base of an altarpiece or a polyptych and is separated from these by moulded framing. Usually, predella panels present paintings divided into scenes, which narrate events closely related to the characters represented in the central part of the painting.
