Lemma
prepared paper
It is a uniformly colored paper and treated (for example burnished) in relation to the necessity of the design that must be executed. Cennino Cennini (end of the 14th Century) teaches some of the procedures practiced by artists to obtain colored paper. Since the end of the 15th Century, this paper has been available directly in paper stores. Among the prepared papers, blue and red paper were most amply used in the course of the 16th Century to make objects stand out more in the eventual highlights and give more depth to the drawing. In these terms, the prepared paper is also noted in the Vocabulary of Filippo Baldinucci (1681) - tinted and colored sheets - they were used for "highlighted designs with ceruse, or gold, or other clear colours, thus clarity and light appears in higher relief."
