Preparatory drawing with the same dimensions of the finished work, whether it be a mural painting, a panel painting, a mosaic, or a tapestry, etc. The cartoon is intended to be the final model for a large-scale work and is created on several sheets of paper which are glued together. The cartoon is transferred onto a chosen support through tracing methods, pouncing techniques(v.), or incision drawings (v.) made with a sharp point. The cartoon technique is described in detail in the writings of Giorgio Vasari (1568) and Giovan Battista Armenini (1587); descriptions may also be found in the writings of both Raffaello Borghini (1584) and Filippo Baldinucci. |
