Procedure for smoothing and polishing a surface by rubbing it with a specific instrument called a burnisher or a burnishing stick. Since the 16th century the term has indicated for the most part the procedure of polishing a metallic surface (v. gilding), as confirmed in the writings of Benvenuto Cellini (1568) and of Filippo Baldinucci (1681).
