Structure usually made of wood, consisting of crosspieces and a stable system of supports adapt to hold weight. In painting, it is a structure to sustain paintings of small and medium dimensions during their elaboration. From the 17th Century, the identification of the dimensions of the work with the use of this structure determined the expression easel painting, to distinguish them from works of grand dimension or mural paintings.
