Inert substance, generally liquid, used to increase the volume or the dispersion, or to decrease the concentration of another substance. Since the 17th century, the use of thinners in binders has been indicated, for the most part, in the form of turpentine and lavender oil. Often thinners may be identified and used as solvents, although this is use usually tied to the practice of restoration and in particular cleaning procedures.
