Dense and viscose natural substance produced from the extracts of some plants. The vegetable gums are soluble in water and find large use in the artistic techniques essentially as binders in watercolour, gouache and tempera: the gum forms a film so fragile that it becomes elastic with the addition of glycerin or honey. Among the gums most utilized in the artistic field are Arabic gum and tragacanth gum. In some recipes, references are made to cherry, peach and plum gums.
