In painting on wood panel, the choice of types of wood to use as a support depends on its characteristics but, above all, on its availability: it is thus strictly dependent on the vegetaion of the region in which the painting is executed. Indicatively, among the wood most commonly used, remember poplar for Italy, Scotch pine for Spain, oak for Flanders, Germany and France, and chestnut for Portugal. Exceptionally, one may note cases, in which the use of wood is not local, as with Fir-tree in the English and Flemmish schools and walnut in the schools of Northern Europe. Also see cypress, ash, larch, mahogany, alder, pear and linden. |
