Paper Restoration

Context

With the largest number of masterpieces and  conservators of artistic heritage in the world, Florence offers the best opportunities to acquire and perfect the skills and knowledge for the protection of cultural heritage.

For 35 years, our Institute has opened its laboratories in July, August and September to students from all over the world who are interested in joining practical courses run by the same teachers as the three-year academic courses.

The introductory course in Restoration of Paper Material and Prints gives participants the opportunity to work on paper material and prints made available by antique dealers and museums in the area to identify problems and deterioration issues and carry out appropriate restoration interventions.


Schedule

Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 13.00 for a total of 40 hours.

 The course will be held in the restoration laboratories in Via dei Michelozzi 2, Firenze.


Admissions

The course is open to all applicants, prior experience in restoration is not necessary.

The course is held in English. Good working knowledge of the language is required.


Student Support 

  • Fee reduction of 20% for applicants who enrol before 29 May 2025.

Qualification

 All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.

Course Programme

·      Preliminary operations for restoration Photographic documentation Analysis of the degradation of the work: biological, physical, chemical The restoration project and sheet Evaluation of the intervention methods Collation of papers and filing Dry operations: the importance of mechanical cleaning. Degumming with various types of rubber and mechanical cleaning with brushes, erasers and scalpels Tests of the solubility of colours and inks. Measurement of the pH The various types of adhesives used in restoration: preparation and comparison Washing by immersion, by nebulisation, by dabbing, on a suction table.

·      Elimination of stains: the level of treatment, analysis of stains, choice of products to reduce a stain. Bleaching with oxidants: evaluation tests.

·      Deacidification Drying Regluing or reinforcing Paper restoration: the different techniques for consolidation, repairing tears, reconstruction of gaps (stripping and imprint), partial or total glazing, paper pulp.

·      Trimming Harnessing: bifolio and cards Leveling of supports.

·      Chromatic integration.

Students are advised to enrol at least two weeks before the beginning of the course. Enrolments are accepted until all the places on the courses have been filled.
