Fresco Painting

Context

With the largest number of masterpieces and conservators of artistic heritage in the world, Florence offers the best opportunities to acquire and perfect the skills and knowledge for the protection of cultural heritage.

For 35 years, our Institute has opened its laboratories in July, August and September to students from all over the world who are interested in joining practical courses run by the same teachers as the three-year academic courses. 

The fresco painting course aims to provide skills in how to create and paint a fresco from start to finish. 


Schedule

Monday to Friday from 13.30 to 17.30 for a total of 40 hours.

 The course will be held in the restoration laboratories in di Via delle Casine, 21/rosso.

 


Admissions

The course is open to all applicants, prior experience in restoration is not necessary.

The course is held in English. Good working knowledge of the language is required.

 


Special Offers 

  • Fee reduction of 20% for applicants who enrol before 1 August 2025.

 All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon completion of the course.

 

Course Program

  • Brief historical introduction on the fresco technique
  • Preparation of the mortar, colors for the fresco, transfer of the design, application of the layers
  • Exercises for managing the color in glazes.
  • Preparation of the tonal intonachino for the creation of a decorative theme with the Sgraffito technique. 
  • Introduction to conservation and restoration challenges and techniques.

Students are advised to enrol at least two weeks before the beginning of the course. Enrolments are accepted until all the places on the courses have been filled.
