Lemma
pontata
Italian term. In the creation of a fresco the pontata indicates a wide band of intonaco laid to be painted upon, before the intonaco dries excessively. Climbing the scaffolding and starting at the top, one works in horizontal bands, descending the scaffolding progressively. In the course of the 14th century, the method begins to substitute that of the giornata, which reduces the amountof visible attachment points of the intonaco and that in general is more adapt for the work of a painter.
