In the process of the creation of a work, the sketch represents a first exercise, or a first thought, in the form of a quick, indefinite image, consisting of a few quick and essential marks. Giorgio Vasari (1568) gave us one of the more precise definitions of the term: "the sketches … call for a first sort of drawing, that one does in order to find a way of positioning and the first component of the work. They are done in the form of marks and everything is outlined with only a single draft. And because of the furor of the artifice, they are done in little time with a pen or another drawing tool or carbon, expressed only to capture the nature of that which meets its needs, thus they are called sketches."
