Tree of the Rosaceae family (cultivated in many varieties for fruit) of which a prestigious, hard and compact wood is acquired. It was utilized as a support for painting in a good part of Europe, particularly in Italy (where, however, its use is sporadic compared to poplar and oak) and in Flanders. |
