Lemma
chiaroscuro
Italian term (literally light-dark). In painting, the term indicates one of the techniques for modelling form by almost imperceptible gradations of light and dark. The use of chiaroscuro for the most part began with the career of Leonardo da Vinci. In the medium of tempera, this technique is difficult to execute due to its clear quick-drying nature, and therefore is associated with the rise of oil painting.
