Lemma
compendium
Italian term deriving from the Latin, Compendiarius. One speaks of Compendiario style or Compendiario painting in reference to paintings created with quick brushstrokes and juxtaposing patches of colour, without the outlines of the figures and the particulars defined. Used by Pliny and Petronius, the term finds specific application in reference to Hellenistic, Roman and Paleo-Christian painting.
