The operation of copying a design by means of tracing paper or other objects. The term, in use since the 16th Century, is clarified in the Dictionary of Filippo Baldinucci (1681) as "copying by means of light…..which is done in diverse manners, or with the help of oily or transparent paper, or paper made with fish glue, or with mirrors or with black veils stretched on a stretcher."
