The operation of grinding colours was anciently done all by hand and was entrusted only to the garzoni of the workshop. After the choice of the minerals or pre-chosen earthen materials (besides pigments of other origin) one began to crush them in a mortar with a pestle, and then they were finely ground on a slab of porphyry with a colour grinder, an operation which varied in length according to the type of pigment. |
