or mannequin. From the French mannequin which was previously derived from the Flemish manneken, little man. Articulated model, of various size, and generally of wood used by painters and sculptors for the study of the movement of the human body and of the drapery, to substitute the living model. According to Giorgio Vasari (1568), it was invented by Fra Bartolomeo.
